Message from the President PDF Print E-mail

I invite everyone to attend our Annual General Meeting on May 12. We are very pleased to announce that our guest speaker will be the Minister of Education, the Honourable Ramona Jennex. It should be a topical and interesting evening. Please come!

This is my last “President’s Message”. It has been an enjoyable three years as constituency president, and I thank the other members of the Executive for their enthusiasm and support of the Association’s activities. The Halifax Chebucto Executive has contributed to the success of one provincial and, hopefully, two federal elections in the last three years. Well done!

MLA’s Report PDF Print E-mail

Dear Member :

Change is always frustratingly slow. But I am happy to report that along with the frustration–and also some outright disappointments–your NDP government has begun to make some very useful changes in the quality of life for Nova Scotians. I want to highlight some :

In combating Poverty, the HST was removed from essential purchases; extensive renovations and repairs were done to public housing; we created a Poverty Reduction Credit and an Affordable Living Tax Credit ; there are improvements to Income Assistance; and the minimum wage has been increased plus the system for setting it is under review.

In Health, alternative delivery models are being put in place following the Ross Report; wait-times are improving; legislation will reduce the cost of prescription drugs.

In the Environment, we have enacted moratoriums on oil & gas exploration on George’s Bank and on uranium mining; land has been added to the public holdings; we have upped the target for electricity to be generated through renewables, and are supporting development of tidal power and a connection to Newfoundland hydro; there is a new water strategy; and fracking is under review.

As a result of fiscal decisions made by the previous government, combined with the recession, we have been in the uncomfortable position of both raising taxes (the HST) and also restraining services. This is not a happy situation, but if the plan adopted works the next two years should see new opportunities open up. In the meantime, your Member continues to work for the best policy choices to be made. Again, I thank you all for your ongoing support and help. I am profoundly grateful for it.
